Leeds Edge Past West Ham in Dramatic Penalty Shootout to Reach FA Cup Semis
Leeds United have booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over West Ham United, following a 2-2 draw after extra time at the London Stadium. The Championship side will now face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium in the last four.
The match seemed destined for a comfortable Leeds victory as they led 2-0 deep into second-half stoppage time. However, West Ham staged a stunning late comeback, scoring twice in the final moments of regulation to send the quarter-final tie to extra time. After a goalless additional 30 minutes, the contest was decided from the penalty spot, where Leeds emerged victorious.
Goalkeeper Lucas Perri, a 60th-minute substitute for the injured Illan Meslier, emerged as the hero for the visitors. The Brazilian goalkeeper, who had only been on the pitch for the final half-hour of extra time, made two crucial saves in the shootout to deny Jarrod Bowen and Pablo Fornals, sending Leeds to Wembley. The victory was particularly dramatic as Leeds had squandered a two-goal lead in the dying moments of normal time, with West Ham scoring twice in the space of three minutes to force extra time.
For Leeds, this represents a historic achievement, marking their first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 2008. The victory sets up a Wembley showdown with Chelsea, who are relying on the FA Cup to salvage a disappointing season. For West Ham, the dramatic exit marks the end of their last realistic chance for silverware this season and compounds a difficult campaign.
The other semi-final will see Manchester City face Southampton, who produced a major upset by eliminating Premier League leaders Arsenal in the quarter-finals. The semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of April 25th, with the final to be played on May 16th. Leeds manager Daniel Farke hailed his team's "character and resilience" in a post-match interview, while also acknowledging the need to improve their game management after the late collapse in regular time.
