Leeds United are increasingly likely to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, with Newcastle United reportedly withdrawing from the race according to multiple reports. The 23-year-old is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium after a frustrating season with limited playing time, despite returning to the club for a reported £27 million from Burnley last year.
Trafford’s departure stems from Manchester City’s acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma, which immediately relegated the England international to a backup role. He made only five starts across all competitions for City, prompting him to seek regular first-team football elsewhere. Several clubs expressed interest, including Aston Villa, but their pursuit has cooled with Emiliano Martinez remaining their priority.
Leeds have been tracking Trafford since February, with initial contact made before his involvement with the England squad this summer. The Whites have reportedly held concrete talks with Trafford’s representatives and have submitted an offer, demonstrating a strong commitment to securing his signature. Sources close to the player indicate he is leaning towards a move to Elland Road.
Newcastle United were also considered contenders, however, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports they are no longer pursuing Trafford. Club-to-club discussions took place during negotiations for Sandro Tonali, but the situation did not progress. Manchester City are now believed to be seeking a fee in the region of £40 million for Trafford, down from earlier reports of £50 million, which may have further dissuaded Newcastle.
Insiders suggest Leeds are prioritizing Trafford as a key component of their summer rebuild, viewing his arrival as a significant statement of intent. The club is also actively pursuing Julian Brandt, with talks underway and the player having visited the Leeds training ground. Securing Trafford would represent a major coup for Leeds as they aim to strengthen their squad following their return to the Championship.
