Leeds United are exploring a potential transfer for Julian Brandt, who became a free agent after his departure from Borussia Dortmund, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post. The 28-year-old attacking midfielder has been without a club for over three months following the expiration of his contract with Dortmund at the end of the season.
Brandt officially left Borussia Dortmund in May, bringing an end to a four-year spell with the Black and Yellows. He arrived at Dortmund from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, and while he was a consistent performer, his contract extension talks ultimately stalled. During his time at Signal Iduna Park, Brandt won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and contributed to Dortmund’s Champions League qualification in multiple seasons.
The report suggests Leeds view themselves as one of several potential destinations for Brandt, with competition from at least one club competing in the Champions League. Previous reports have linked the German international with moves to Galatasaray and Atlético Madrid, indicating a broad range of interest in his services. Brandt’s availability on a free transfer makes him an attractive option for clubs seeking to bolster their attacking options without an immediate transfer fee.
Throughout his Bundesliga career, spanning appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, Brandt has established himself as a creative and productive midfielder. He has made 383 appearances in the German top flight, scoring 77 goals and providing 92 assists. His versatility allows him to play in multiple attacking positions, including as a central attacking midfielder, on the wings, or even as a supporting forward.
Leeds United, recently relegated to the Championship, are undergoing a significant rebuild under new ownership and management. Adding a player of Brandt’s quality and experience could provide a considerable boost to their promotion ambitions. The move would represent a significant statement of intent for the club as they aim to return to the Premier League. The potential arrival of Brandt could also raise the overall quality and profile of the Championship.
