Leeds United are increasingly confident of securing the signing of Julian Brandt following the near completion of a club-record deal for goalkeeper James Trafford, according to reports. The Whites are reportedly in a strong position to sign the German playmaker, potentially without competition from other interested clubs after presenting a compelling offer to his representatives.
Leeds finished 14th in the Premier League last season and are aiming to strengthen their squad under manager Daniel Farke. The signing of Trafford, valued at around £40 million, will take their total summer spending past £74 million, with Harry Wilson arriving on a free transfer and Tarik Muharemovic brought in to replace Pascal Struijk. Brandt represents a further addition of quality to the squad.
Brandt is a free agent after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired, and Leeds have already engaged in talks with his father, Jurgen, at their training ground. While Roma, Ajax, and Real Betis have also been linked with the 30-year-old, FourFourTwo reports that Leeds are now the frontrunners, offering a more financially attractive package. Multiple sources last week indicated that a deal for Brandt ‘will get done’.
Ajax are reportedly unable to match Leeds’ offer, and Roma have also seemingly withdrawn from the race, with Real Betis previously ruled out. The German international has amassed an impressive 221 goal contributions – 99 goals and 122 assists – in 522 senior appearances for both Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
Sources have indicated that Leeds have made a strong case for Brandt, outlining their plans for him within the team. While Brandt may prefer a club competing in the Champions League, Leeds are hoping their overall package will prove persuasive. The presence of German speakers within the coaching staff, including Farke, and compatriot Anton Stach could also aid his integration into the team. The imminent arrival of Trafford, who reportedly prioritized a move to Leeds, further demonstrates the club’s ambition.
