Leeds United are poised to intensify their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, with manager Daniel Farke identifying the 22-year-old as a key target, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The Championship club have been tracking Charles for multiple transfer windows, with interest dating back to his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in the 2024/25 campaign.
Southampton’s failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League following their play-off exit has presented Leeds with an opportunity to finally land the Northern Ireland international. Charles, who has 32 caps for his country, is seen as an ideal fit for Farke’s squad due to his physical presence – he stands at 6ft 2in – and versatility.
While primarily a central midfielder, Charles is also capable of playing in wide areas and at full-back, attributes that make him a valuable asset outside of the top flight. Leeds’ recruitment team believe his profile aligns with the energetic and technically demanding style of play Farke wants to implement at Elland Road. They view him as someone who could strengthen multiple areas of the squad.
Southampton are reportedly reluctant to sell, but with Charles entering the final year of his contract, they are expected to listen to offers. The Saints are understood to value the player at around £20 million. Despite interest from other Premier League clubs, including Everton, and sides across Europe, sources indicate Leeds are currently in the strongest position to secure his signature.
Leeds have a history of targeting players with expiring contracts, believing they can be acquired at a favourable fee, and they have reportedly conducted extensive background work on Charles. The club also believes he has the potential to develop into a Premier League-level performer, making him a sound investment regardless of the club’s league status. A potential arrival for Charles could open the door for midfielder Illia Gruev to depart, though the Bulgarian has expressed his desire to remain at Elland Road.
