Paris FC captain Pierre Lees-Melou has publicly criticised the lack of communication with match officials after his sending-off in a 1-0 Ligue 1 defeat to Lille on Sunday. The midfielder was dismissed in the match at the Stade Charléty for a show of dissent, after he made a gesture suggesting he would throw the ball to the ground in frustration. Following the match, Lees-Melou used his post-match comments to renew his advocacy for the implementation of referee microphones in the French top flight.
Speaking in the mixed zone, Lees-Melou expressed his frustration at the inability to converse with the match referee, Benoît Bastien. "Of course I didn't speak with him, you can't talk to Mr. Vernice," Lees-Melou said, using a colloquial term for officials. "As captain, I normally have the right to speak to him. But captain or not, you can't talk to them. That's why I'm still in favour of the audio system. They should install it quickly. It would relax everyone." The player had previously called for the sonorisation of referees in an interview with L'Équipe in early April.
The red card incident occurred deep into the second half of a tight contest settled by a Jonathan David goal. Lees-Melou explained his actions, stating, "I'm frustrated, but we don't even have the right to be frustrated with ourselves anymore. I never target the referee. I made a gesture of frustration where I wanted to throw [the ball] to the ground, which I didn't do, because I know it's punishable. But well, I'm not surprised he gave me a red. He already gave me one last year with Brest." The 30-year-old was indeed sent off while playing for Brest in a match against Monaco in May 2023, also under Bastien's officiating.
The French league has been testing referee communication technology in recent weeks, but it has not yet been rolled out across all matches. Lees-Melou's comments highlight an ongoing debate in French football regarding transparency and the relationship between players and officials. His dismissal proved costly for a Paris FC side embroiled in a relegation battle, leaving them to see out the final minutes with ten men as they sought an equaliser.
Lees-Melou, a seasoned campaigner with experience at Guingamp, Nice, and Norwich City, joined Paris FC last summer. His leadership has been central to the club's fight for survival under manager Stéphane Gilli. The defeat leaves Paris FC just three points above the relegation play-off place with seven games remaining, adding significance to the loss of their captain for a crucial period. The incident is likely to reignite discussions at the Ligue de Football Professionnel about accelerating the implementation of communication technology to aid in-game understanding.
