Eintracht Frankfurt host Köln in Bundesliga clash with new coach in dugout
Eintracht Frankfurt will host 1. FC Köln at Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday in the final match of Bundesliga matchday 28, with the visitors set to be led by interim coach René Wagner for the first time. The 37-year-old Wagner steps up from his role as an assistant following the dismissal of Lukas Kwasniok during the international break, tasked with guiding Köln's fight against relegation in the season's final stretch.
Wagner, who was also part of Steffen Baumgart's coaching staff during a successful period at the club, faces a challenging debut. His first match as a head coach comes against a Frankfurt side that has been formidable at home under their own manager, Albert Riera. Since Riera's arrival, Frankfurt have won all three of their home league matches without conceding a goal, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach, SC Freiburg, and Heidenheim.
That strong home form contrasts sharply with Frankfurt's struggles on the road, where they have taken just one point under Riera. The Spaniard recently acknowledged the pressure after a late defeat to Mainz, a result that has severely dented European qualification hopes. Frankfurt now sit eight points behind sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, making a return to either the Europa League or Europa Conference League unlikely for only the second time since 2021.
Frankfurt will be without defender Nnamdi Collins, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season after requiring ankle surgery. Köln, meanwhile, receive a boost with several key players returning to full fitness, but they must cope without midfielder Eric Martel. Martel, who scored a late equalizer in the derby draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, was sent off shortly after his goal and is suspended.
The reverse fixture in November ended in a dramatic 4-3 victory for Frankfurt, ending a six-game winless run against Köln. On that occasion, Dino Toppmöller's side raced into a 4-1 lead after conceding early, but conceded twice late on to endure a nervous finish. The result provided a vital three points in what has been an inconsistent season for Die Adler.
For Köln, the appointment of Wagner represents a bid for stability and a familiar voice in a critical period. The club sits perilously close to the relegation zone, with crucial fixtures against direct rivals Werder Bremen and St. Pauli looming after the trip to Frankfurt. Wagner's intimate knowledge of the squad is seen as an asset in organizing a survival push.
The match pits Riera's quest for home consistency against a Köln side in transition. A win for Frankfurt would solidify their position in the top half of the table, while for Köln, any positive result could provide crucial momentum ahead of their season-defining run-in. The tactical approach of the novice head coach Wagner against Riera's settled home tactics will be a key narrative.
