RB Leipzig have halted Willi Orbán’s proposed transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al-Diriyah, reversing course on a deal that was nearing completion. The sudden change of heart from the Bundesliga side came just hours before a scheduled medical examination, according to Sky Germany.
Managing Director for Sport Marcel Schäfer is reported to have made the final decision to block the move, citing a recent injury to defender Abdoul Koné as the key factor. Koné’s injury has prompted Leipzig to reconsider their squad depth ahead of the upcoming season, leading them to retain the experienced Orbán.
A doctor from Al-Diriyah had already travelled to Leipzig to oversee Orbán’s medical, which has now been cancelled. The Saudi club were prepared to offer the 33-year-old a two-year contract worth €15 million, but Leipzig’s intervention means Orbán will remain with the German side.
Orbán has been a mainstay in the Leipzig defence since joining from Kaiserslautern in 2016, making over 200 appearances for the club. He has won two DFB-Pokal titles with Leipzig and has become a respected figure within the squad. His current contract with Leipzig runs until 2027, demonstrating the club’s long-term faith in his abilities.
The reversal is a blow to Al-Diriyah, who have been actively strengthening their squad with high-profile signings as part of the Saudi Pro League’s ambitious project. Leipzig’s decision ensures Orbán will be available for their Champions League campaign under new head coach Martin Demichelis, providing valuable experience and leadership to the team. The club will now rely on Orbán’s continued presence to navigate a demanding season across multiple competitions.
