Lens-PSG Ligue 1 Clash Officially Postponed by French League
The Ligue de Football Professionnel has officially postponed the Ligue 1 match between RC Lens and Paris Saint-Germain, originally scheduled for this weekend. The decision, confirmed by the league body, comes amid a congested calendar due to PSG's progression to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. The fixture, a key encounter in the 29th matchday, is now expected to be played on either May 6 or May 13, slotting between the 33rd and 34th rounds of the league season.
Lens manager Pierre Sage expressed his continued opposition to the rescheduling but adopted a pragmatic stance in his pre-match press conference. "I was against it, you can imagine my opinion is still the same," Sage stated. "That's how it is, and we're not going to play the victim. The date has been moved, but the match isn't played. We still have our chances, and we will seize them fully." He added a note of caution about the prolonged wait, joking that overthinking the delay until the new date would require "a lot of Doliprane," a common French painkiller.
The postponement has sparked debate among other clubs, with Lille manager Bruno Genesio voicing concerns over sporting integrity. Genesio questioned the logic of moving the match, noting that the league typically insists the final two matchdays are played simultaneously. "What bothers me is the date," Genesio said. "We are usually told that the last two days must be at the same time, with halves ending at the same moment... Here, it is postponed between the 33rd and 34th matchday." His comments highlight a perceived inconsistency in the league's scheduling principles.
For Lens, currently fighting for European qualification, the delay creates an extended period of anticipation for a crucial fixture. The match against the league leaders represents a significant opportunity to gain points against a direct rival at the top of the table. The reshuffling means their run-in will be heavily impacted by this rescheduled high-stakes clash.
For Paris Saint-Germain, the change alleviates immediate fixture congestion as they compete on multiple fronts. However, it compresses their end-of-season schedule, potentially forcing them to play this difficult away match at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis deep into the title run-in. The decision underscores the ongoing challenge French authorities face in balancing domestic commitments with the cup competitions of its leading clubs.
The league has also confirmed the postponement of the concurrent match between Brest and Strasbourg. No official reason was cited for that fixture's delay, but it is understood to be part of the same scheduling adjustment. The LFP will now work to finalize the exact dates and times for both matches in the coming days.
