Real Madrid fans identify PSG's Vitinha as dream midfield signing
Real Madrid supporters have overwhelmingly identified Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha as their top target to revitalise the club's midfield, according to a fan poll conducted by Spanish radio station Cadena Ser. The survey, published on Thursday, asked fans which player the club should prioritise to strengthen its engine room ahead of the next season.
The poll revealed that 34% of participating Madridistas voted for the Portuguese international, placing him well ahead of Manchester City's Rodri, who garnered 16% of the vote. Benfica's Enco Fernández and Vitinha's PSG teammate João Neves each received 10%, tying with Real Sociedad's Martín Zubimendi. The results highlight a clear fan desire for the 24-year-old playmaker, whose full name is Vítor Machado Ferreira, to move to the Bernabéu.
The context for this fan sentiment stems from a season perceived as underwhelming for Real Madrid, with the club facing the prospect of finishing without a major trophy. This has led to internal scrutiny of the squad's collective limits and sparked early speculation about significant incoming transfers to provide what fans describe as a 'second wind'. The midfield, in particular, is viewed as an area requiring reinforcement to restore the team's dominance.
However, a move for Vitinha appears fraught with difficulty. The player himself publicly dismissed transfer rumours linking him to Madrid in March, telling media it "would be stupid to leave" PSG. Having established himself as a key metronome in Luis Enrique's system since his move from Porto in 2022, Vitinha is considered integral to the Parisian project. Furthermore, PSG's financial power and sporting ambition make them highly reluctant sellers, especially for a player entering his prime years and under a long-term contract.
For Real Madrid, the attraction is clear. Vitinha's profile as a technically gifted, press-resistant midfielder who dictates tempo would offer a different dimension to a unit currently built around the physicality of Aurélien Tchouaméni and the dynamism of Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham. His ability to progress the ball and operate in tight spaces aligns with the club's traditional stylistic values.
The fan poll, while not reflective of club strategy, underscores the growing pressure on the Madrid hierarchy to deliver a statement signing following a trophyless campaign. The club's plans are likely to be influenced by the future of several current squad members, with the ageing Luka Modric and Toni Kroos nearing the end of their legendary careers. Whether the Madrid board shares the fans' specific vision for Vitinha, or pursues alternative targets like Zubimendi or Neves, remains to be seen. The coming months will test the club's ability to navigate a complex market and satisfy a demanding fanbase eager for a return to the summit of European football.
