Bayer Leverkusen have completed the permanent signing of Afonso Moreira from Olympique Lyon, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Friday. The Portuguese under-21 international has agreed to a long-term contract with Leverkusen, extending until June 30, 2031.
Moreira, a left winger, made 37 appearances across all competitions for Lyon last season, registering eight goals and eleven assists. He arrived at Lyon from Belenenses in January 2023, quickly establishing himself as a regular contributor despite the club’s overall struggles. The move to Leverkusen represents a significant step in the young player’s career, offering him a platform in a consistently competitive league.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes highlighted Moreira’s attributes, describing him as “a fast, agile, and skillful striker with a good finishing ability and excellent vision.” Rolfes further stated that Moreira’s “pace and intense style of play are a perfect fit for our team,” and that he would add “additional firepower and creativity in attack.” Leverkusen have been proactive in the transfer market this summer, strengthening their squad following a strong campaign last season.
Moreira himself expressed his delight at joining the club, stating he was “very proud and happy to be able to wear the Bayer Leverkusen jersey.” He explained that the club felt like an “excellent fit for my sporting ambitions” from the initial conversations, and that the club’s interest was a key factor in his decision. Leverkusen finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, securing a Champions League spot, and will be looking to build on that success with the addition of Moreira.
The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club. Leverkusen’s attack already features established players, and Moreira will compete for a starting position on the left wing. His arrival provides manager Xabi Alonso with further tactical flexibility as the club prepares for a demanding season balancing domestic and European commitments.
