Bayer Leverkusen are compiling a list of potential managerial candidates as uncertainty surrounds the future of current head coach Xabi Alonso, with Danny Röhl, Oliver Glasner and Míchel emerging as key targets. The Bundesliga leaders have been linked with a number of coaches in recent days, according to FußballTransfers.com, as they prepare for a potential summer change in the dugout.
Röhl, currently managing Scottish Premiership side Rangers, is considered an intriguing option despite lacking experience managing in Germany’s top three tiers. The 37-year-old Zwickau native took over at Ibrox in November 2023, having previously managed in the 2. Bundesliga with Greuther Fürth. His appointment would represent a departure from Leverkusen’s recent tradition of experienced managers.
However, Sport BILD reports that Oliver Glasner remains the club’s primary target should Alonso depart. Glasner, who previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg, has a proven track record in the Bundesliga, leading Frankfurt to Europa League success in 2022. While Leverkusen’s management are familiar with Glasner, concerns exist regarding his willingness to challenge the board when he believes it’s in the best interest of the team.
FC Girona’s Míchel has also been added to Leverkusen’s shortlist, as reported by Sport BILD, with the Spaniard’s contract with the La Liga club set to expire at the end of the season. Míchel has overseen a successful campaign with Girona, guiding them to a potential Champions League qualification spot. He was previously a candidate to replace Alonso last year, and discussions were reportedly held, with contact continuing since.
Ajax Amsterdam are also reportedly interested in Míchel, but the coach is believed to favour a move to a top club in either England or Germany. This preference could significantly boost Leverkusen’s chances of securing his services should Alonso move on. The potential appointment of any of these managers would mark a new chapter for Leverkusen, who are currently enjoying a dominant season under Alonso.
