Bayer Leverkusen have announced the appointment of Carles Martinez Novell as their new manager, effective immediately. The move comes after Kasper Hjulmand departed the Bundesliga club on Thursday, despite having a year remaining on his contract. Leverkusen confirmed the appointment in an official statement, dismissing speculation linking Andoni Iraola to the role, with Iraola now heavily favored to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool.
Novell joins Leverkusen from Ligue 1 side Toulouse FC, where his contract was set to expire. The Spanish manager will be presented to the media on Friday, and has signed a two-year deal with the German club. While he may be trading a vibrant city for one described as less appealing, Novell faces a significant sporting challenge in returning Leverkusen to the Champions League.
The 2023-2024 Bundesliga champions endured a disappointing season, culminating in the early dismissal of Erik ten Hag and a sixth-place finish. Leverkusen’s director general, Fernando Carro, expressed confidence that Novell’s profile “perfectly matches” the club’s ambition to remain competitive at the highest level and consolidate their position among Europe’s elite clubs.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes highlighted Novell’s success in developing young players and building a cohesive team, noting his experience at the FC Barcelona academy as a valuable asset. Rolfes also praised Novell’s technical expertise and unwavering dedication to his employers. Novell’s time at Toulouse saw him lead the team to victory in the 2023 Coupe de France, solidifying his reputation as a capable manager. This appointment signals Leverkusen’s intent to rebuild and challenge for top honors in both domestic and European competitions.
