Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as strong competition to Newcastle United in the pursuit of Toulouse full-back Dayann Methalie, according to TEAMtalk. Both clubs are currently evaluating potential moves for the 20-year-old France Under-21 international.
Newcastle have been long-term admirers of Methalie and recently renewed their interest with fresh enquiries as they seek to bolster their defensive options. However, Leverkusen’s entry into the race, following the appointment of former Toulouse manager Carles Martínez Novell, presents a significant challenge to the Magpies’ hopes.
Martínez Novell’s presence is particularly noteworthy, given his close working relationship with Methalie and his pivotal role in the player’s development at Toulouse. Methalie enjoyed a breakthrough season last year, becoming a regular starter as a left wing-back for Toulouse and establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most promising young defenders.
Newcastle initially identified Methalie as a potential target last summer and increased their interest during the January transfer window, even making a formal approach. However, a knee injury that sidelined the player for approximately six weeks led Newcastle to postpone their pursuit. Now fully recovered, Methalie has once again become a priority for the St James’ Park outfit.
The club views him as an ideal modern full-back, capable of playing in both wing-back and traditional full-back roles, aligning with Eddie Howe’s long-term strategy. Leverkusen, however, are preparing for a potential reshuffle in their full-back department, with Alejandro Grimaldo attracting interest from clubs like Atletico Madrid. Martínez Novell believes Methalie has the potential to become a top wing-back in Europe and thrive in the Bundesliga.
Newcastle remain interested and have reopened communication, but they now face competition from a Champions League club with a manager who has a pre-existing relationship with the player. This development represents a genuine concern for the Magpies as they navigate the transfer market.
