Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of Luca Erlein from fellow Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim. The 19-year-old right-back has signed a long-term contract with Leverkusen, extending to 2030, the club confirmed on Saturday. The transfer fee is reported to be €2 million, according to Transfermarkt.
Leverkusen’s managing director of sport, Simon Rolfes, praised Erlein as “a highly talented, intelligent and robust defender,” expressing the club’s delight at securing his signature. The move represents a significant step up for the young defender, who has largely featured for Hoffenheim’s reserve team.
Erlein progressed through the youth ranks at Hoffenheim, becoming a regular fixture in their 3. Liga side last season. He made a single senior appearance for Hoffenheim in the Europa League during the 2024/25 campaign, gaining initial experience at the highest level. Despite limited first-team minutes, his potential clearly attracted Leverkusen’s attention.
This transfer continues Leverkusen’s trend of investing in promising young talent, particularly from the German youth setup. They already boast Montrell Culbreath, who broke into the first team last season, and Francis Onyeka, who will continue his development on loan at Elversberg following a successful spell at VfL Bochum. Both players were also part of the Germany U19 team that reached the final of the European Championship last month.
Competition for a starting role at right-back could initially limit Erlein’s immediate game time. Leverkusen currently have experienced options in Lucas Vázquez and Brazilian international Arthur. A loan spell could therefore be considered to allow Erlein to gain further competitive experience before challenging for a regular place in Xabi Alonso’s squad. The signing provides Leverkusen with a long-term solution at right-back and adds depth to their defensive options.
