Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has indicated he is considering a move to Major League Soccer as his contract with the Catalan club approaches its expiration. The 37-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, leading to speculation about his future, with Barcelona currently engaged in discussions regarding a potential extension.
According to AS, Lewandowski stated he is aware he has 51 days remaining on his contract and will evaluate offers before making a decision. He acknowledged the possibility of joining a lower league, suggesting a willingness to consider options beyond remaining at the highest level of European football. While feeling physically fit, Lewandowski also expressed a desire to potentially “play and enjoy life,” hinting at a shift in priorities.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently commented on Lewandowski’s situation, telling RAC1 in March that the club would be open to offering a contract renewal if the player desires to stay and accepts a potentially adjusted role within the team. Laporta also mentioned that the club is covered in the striker position with both Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, but would consider further signings if necessary, even referencing Harry Kane as a potential target.
Chicago Fire have emerged as a leading potential destination for Lewandowski in MLS. Reports earlier this year indicated the Fire made a substantial contract offer to the Polish international. The club has previously pursued other high-profile players, including Neymar, Kevin De Bruyne, and Mohamed Salah, demonstrating their ambition to attract a global superstar. Lewandowski’s arrival would represent a significant coup for the Fire, potentially eclipsing the impact of previous signings like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Xherdan Shaqiri.
The cultural connection between Lewandowski and Chicago could also be a factor, as the city boasts the largest Polish community in the United States. The Chicago Fire have also featured several Polish players throughout their history, including dual nationals. While recent links had reportedly cooled, Lewandowski’s recent statements suggest a move to MLS, and specifically to the Chicago Fire, remains a viable option.
