Lewandowski clarifies Barcelona future as contract expiry looms
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club, confirming that no definitive decision has been made regarding a potential contract extension. The 37-year-old's current deal expires at the end of June, and while Barcelona have presented a renewal offer, his continuation at the Spotify Camp Nou is not yet assured.
Speaking to MD, Lewandowski sought to clarify the situation amid reports he is already exploring options elsewhere. "We still have a little time," the Polish international said. "The club knows what I think and I have had time to think. I don’t want to talk about offers and my future. The remaining games and the goals are more important. That something new comes out in the press every day is not important." His comments come with Barcelona on the verge of securing the La Liga title, which the veteran forward indicated is the immediate priority.
Lewandowski also reflected on the club's recent elimination from the Champions League by Atletico Madrid, a result he described as painful. "It always hurts. We tried until the end," he stated. "Now we have to concentrate on La Liga. We have a few games left and we want to win it." He emphasized the need for the squad to focus on the future, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the sport. "Football is not always fair. We cannot think too much about what has already happened, but we must think now about the future."
The forward's future represents a significant piece of Barcelona's planned summer business. Since arriving from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, Lewandowski has been a pivotal figure, scoring over 80 goals for the Catalans and helping them to a La Liga title in his first season. His potential departure would mark the end of a major era for the club's attack and necessitate a substantial reinvestment in a new focal point, a complex task given the club's ongoing financial constraints.
For Lewandowski, the decision likely hinges on the sporting project presented by Barcelona and the length and terms of any new deal. At 37, he remains a prolific scorer but the club may be considering a longer-term succession plan. His situation is being monitored by clubs in Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League, according to widespread reports, should he choose to embark on a final major challenge away from European football's top tier.
The coming weeks, following the anticipated confirmation of the league title, are expected to bring clarity. Both parties appear to be proceeding with caution, with Lewandowski's remarks underscoring a mutual understanding that discussions are ongoing but unresolved, leaving one of the summer's first major sagas poised to develop.
