Robert Lewandowski is set to join Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano. The Poland international, who missed the recent World Cup, visited the club’s facilities two weeks ago and is expected to sign a contract for two to three seasons early next week.
Lewandowski arrives at Chicago Fire after four years with FC Barcelona, where he joined on a free transfer following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season with Bayern Munich. At Barcelona, the forward scored 33 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions, though his time at the club was marked by financial difficulties and ultimately, a departure as a free agent.
The move to MLS represents a new chapter for Lewandowski, who has consistently been one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers throughout his career. Prior to his time in Spain, he established himself as a Bundesliga legend with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, winning multiple league titles and the Champions League with the latter. He holds the record for most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season, netting 41 times in 2020-21.
Chicago Fire will be hoping Lewandowski can provide a significant boost to their attacking options and overall competitiveness in MLS. The club finished 12th in the Eastern Conference last season, missing out on the playoffs. His arrival is expected to generate significant interest in the team and the league, potentially attracting further high-profile players to the MLS in the future. The signing of Lewandowski follows Chicago Fire's acquisition of Jonathan Bamba, further strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.
