Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed striker Isac Lidberg from SV Darmstadt 98 on a permanent deal. The 27-year-old has agreed to a long-term contract with Die Fohlen, extending until 2030. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club.
The move sees Lidberg step up to the Bundesliga after a prolific spell in the 2. Bundesliga with Darmstadt. He scored 31 goals in 58 appearances for the Lilies, playing a key role in their promotion to the top flight last season. Darmstadt were subsequently relegated, opening the door for Lidberg’s transfer to Mönchengladbach.
Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder highlighted Lidberg’s physical attributes and goalscoring instinct as key reasons for the club’s pursuit. “Isac is a goal threat, physically strong, and knows how to assert himself in duels,” Schröder said in a club statement. “Combined with his dynamism and mentality, this paints the picture of an aggressive centre-forward.” Schröder also emphasized Lidberg’s enthusiasm for joining the club, noting his ambition and desire to contribute.
Lidberg himself expressed his excitement about joining Mönchengladbach, a club he followed during his childhood. “When I heard about Borussia’s interest, I was immediately excited,” Lidberg stated. “Borussia is a big club with an impressive history. Already as a child, I followed the Bundesliga and often watched Borussia games. So it didn’t take much convincing. For me, it quickly became clear that I wanted to take this step.”
Mönchengladbach finished 13th in the Bundesliga last season, struggling for consistency throughout the campaign. The addition of Lidberg is intended to bolster their attacking options and provide a focal point in attack. The club will be hoping Lidberg can replicate his 2. Bundesliga form and establish himself as a key player in the Bundesliga, potentially improving their league position next season.
