Pep Guardiola’s impending exit from Manchester City will be followed by the departure of assistant coach Pep Lijnders, according to reports. The Athletic’s Liverpool expert, James Pearce, revealed that Lijnders will leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season, despite the club’s efforts to retain his services.
Lijnders previously spent nearly a decade as Jurgen Klopp’s assistant at Liverpool across two spells, forging a strong connection with the club. His decision to move on alongside Guardiola comes as Enzo Maresca prepares to take the managerial reins at Manchester City, having previously managed Chelsea. City had hoped Lijnders would remain to aid the transition, but the Dutchman has opted against signing a new long-term contract to work under Maresca.
Guardiola announced on Friday that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the current campaign, bringing an end to a decade-long tenure that yielded 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League victory. The club intends to honour Guardiola with a north stand named in his honour and a statue at the stadium.
In addition to the managerial and coaching changes, Manchester City are also facing potential departures of key players, with John Stones and Bernardo Silva both set to leave on free transfers. The confirmation of Maresca as Guardiola’s replacement has been anticipated for some time, and the club is now preparing for a new era under the former Chelsea boss. The departure of Lijnders adds another layer of change as City reshape their backroom staff. This dual departure could signal a significant shift in tactical approach and club culture as Maresca establishes his own vision at the Etihad.
