Inter Milan are in advanced discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential transfer for Argentinian centre-back Cristian Romero, according to reports from Corriere dello Sport. The 28-year-old, currently preparing for the World Cup with Argentina, has been identified as a target by the Italian club.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 for a reported fee of €53.8 million. He has been a regular fixture in the Spurs squad since, though has reportedly expressed a desire to return to Italy. Tottenham have reportedly offered Romero to Inter as part of wider negotiations, coinciding with Inter’s interest in right-back Djed Spence.
The player, who previously played for Genoa and Juventus, is currently under contract with Tottenham until 2029. Inter are prepared to offer Romero a four or five-year contract worth €5 million per year, with potential bonuses, a slight decrease from his current earnings in the Premier League.
Initial discussions saw Tottenham value Romero at €50 million, however, Inter are hoping to secure a deal closer to €40 million, including add-ons. Negotiations are progressing well, and Inter have given themselves a timeframe of one to ten days to finalise the transfer before pursuing alternative targets. The move would reunite Romero with a Serie A landscape where he previously excelled, and potentially strengthen Inter’s defensive options under manager Cristian Chivu. A successful transfer could also free up funds for Tottenham to reinvest in other areas of their squad.
