Inter are in talks with Lazio regarding a potential transfer for goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, though an agreement is not yet in place, according to reports in Italy. The Nerazzurri are seeking a reliable backup for Pepo Martinez, who emerged as the club’s number one following the departure of Yann Sommer.
Inter opted against pursuing more expensive goalkeeping options like Guglielmo Vicario, prioritizing a player who would complement Martinez within their budget. Martinez finished the season strongly, playing a key role in Inter’s Coppa Italia victory, and has convinced the club of his potential despite a difficult start to life in Milan following his arrival from Genoa last summer for €14 million.
Provedel, 32, has been a consistent performer for Lazio, though his form dipped slightly during the 2023-24 season under coach Marco Baroni. He currently earns €1 million net per year at Lazio and is seeking to double that figure, with Inter offering a two-year contract worth €1.5 million annually. The primary obstacle to the transfer remains reaching an agreement with Lazio president Claudio Lotito.
Lazio are reportedly seeking a fee of €5 million for Provedel, while Inter have offered between €2-3 million. Inter believe Lazio will be compelled to sell due to financial constraints and the need to generate funds for new signings under incoming coach Gennaro Gattuso. Furthermore, the emergence of young goalkeeper Alessandro Motta and the return of Marco Mandas from a loan spell at Bournemouth provide Lazio with alternative options. Negotiations are ongoing, and Inter remain optimistic, citing a similar successful negotiation with Lotito for Francesco Acerbi in 2022. Provedel is understood to favour a move to Inter, viewing it as a significant step in his career and motivated by the opportunity to compete with Martinez for the starting position, despite being initially positioned as the second-choice goalkeeper.
