Liverpool could be willing to sell midfielder Alexis Mac Allister this summer if a suitable offer is received, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The news comes following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as the club’s new head coach.
Mac Allister, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, experienced a largely underwhelming 2025/26 season with Liverpool, making 37 Premier League appearances and starting nine Champions League matches under former manager Arne Slot. Despite his international success, the 27-year-old’s performances were considered below par.
Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, are reportedly open to allowing Mac Allister to depart if their valuation is met. The club originally paid Brighton and Hove Albion £55 million for the player in 2023, and will likely seek a comparable fee. Romano stated on his YouTube channel that changes in midfield are possible, but clarified that a sale is not guaranteed.
Interest has emerged from Spain, with AS reporting that Real Madrid are monitoring Mac Allister as a potential reinforcement for their midfield. However, the Spanish giants are also considering other options, including Enzo Fernandez, Kees Smit, Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Rodri. Mac Allister is said to be ‘on Real Madrid’s shortlist’ as they assess potential targets.
Recent reports have suggested Iraola is prepared to make significant changes to the Liverpool squad, potentially identifying up to seven players for sale. Mac Allister’s future at Anfield appears uncertain as the new manager assesses his options. A departure for the Argentinian international could free up funds for Iraola to pursue alternative midfield targets and reshape the team in his image.
Should Mac Allister move to Real Madrid, he would join a team consistently competing at the highest level of European football. A sale would also allow Liverpool to recoup a significant portion of the fee they initially paid for the player.
