Liverpool Accelerate Manager Review as Slot Faces Uncertain Future
Liverpool have accelerated a review of manager Arne Slot's position following a series of damaging defeats, according to sources close to the club. The review, which is now underway, will determine the Dutchman's future at Anfield after a run of poor form.
Liverpool's season has unravelled since the turn of the year, with Saturday's 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final defeat away to Manchester City marking the team's 15th defeat of the campaign. This followed a difficult second half of the previous season, where the Reds lost eight games. Since the start of 2025, Liverpool have lost 23 matches across all competitions.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, the club's hierarchy, including sporting director Michael Edwards and technical director Richard Hughes, has brought forward a planned end-of-season review. The process, which is already underway, will determine whether Slot remains in charge for the final year of his contract. Sources suggest the club is considering all options, including the possibility of a mutual parting of ways, which would allow the club to maintain its reputation for not sacking managers.
The pressure on Slot has been intensified by a growing disconnect with the club's supporters. The sight of thousands of Liverpool fans leaving the Etihad Stadium early during the heavy defeat to Manchester City was described by The Times journalist Henry Winter as a "very damaging" moment for the manager. Winter noted that the fans, "usually defiant," were now "voting with their feet."
Slot's position is complicated by Liverpool's current league standing. The team sits 5th in the Premier League, and while they are in the Champions League quarter-finals, their form in the Premier League has been inconsistent. Journalist Henry Winter suggested Champions League qualification, either by winning the competition or finishing in the top four, is a crucial factor for the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group.
Despite the poor run, the 45-year-old Slot retains credit for guiding Liverpool to a domestic cup double last season, and the club's leadership is said to be conducting a thorough and fair review. The outcome will likely hinge on the team's performance in the final months of the season, with the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain and key away fixtures against Everton, Manchester United, and Aston Villa set to be decisive.
