Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes, confirming a deal that was widely anticipated since early February. The Premier League club confirmed the transfer in a statement released on Wednesday, with Jacquet expressing his delight at joining a club of Liverpool’s stature. He has signed a “long-term” contract, though the precise duration has not been disclosed.
Jacquet, 20, arrives at Anfield for a reported fee of €70 million, representing a club-record sale for Rennes. The move marks a significant investment by Liverpool in their defensive options and signals a high regard for the young Frenchman’s potential. He progressed through the youth ranks at the Brittany-based club, making 33 professional appearances for Rennes prior to the transfer.
Following the announcement of his impending departure, Jacquet’s playing time at Rennes was limited due to a shoulder injury, resulting in only two appearances in the latter half of the season. Despite the injury disrupting his final months with the club, his performances prior to that had clearly impressed Liverpool’s scouting network. He established himself as a regular starter for Rennes in Ligue 1, demonstrating composure and tactical awareness beyond his years.
Liverpool have been seeking to bolster their defensive line following injuries to key players and the departure of established names in recent seasons. Jacquet’s arrival provides manager Jürgen Klopp with another option at centre-back, offering both immediate cover and long-term potential. The transfer is expected to increase competition for places within the squad and contribute to Liverpool’s continued push for silverware in both domestic and European competitions.
