Liverpool are reportedly considering dismissing manager Arne Slot following a disappointing season, with Luis Enrique emerging as the leading candidate to replace him, according to TEAMtalk and sources within the club. The potential change in leadership comes after a recent defeat at Aston Villa and comments from forward Mohamed Salah expressing his frustrations.
Liverpool finished the season with 59 points, securing a Champions League spot despite losing 19 matches across all competitions. While the club has cited mitigating factors such as injuries to Diogo Jota and a dip in form from Mohamed Salah, as well as significant changes to the squad last summer, internal sentiment appears to be shifting against Slot.
According to Graeme Bailey, an insider for TEAMtalk, FSG, Liverpool’s ownership group, are now seriously weighing up a sacking, a reversal of previous indications that they would support Slot for another season. Salah’s recent comments are understood to have been particularly impactful, with internal acknowledgement of the validity of his concerns.
With Slot’s position increasingly precarious, bookmakers have installed Luis Enrique as the favourite to take over at Anfield. Enrique recently guided Paris Saint-Germain to a domestic quadruple and has led them to a second consecutive Champions League final, where they will face Arsenal. He previously managed Barcelona, winning a treble during his tenure, and is known for his high-pressing tactical approach.
Enrique is currently under contract with PSG, but negotiations regarding an extension have not yet been finalised, leaving the door open for a potential move to Liverpool. Other candidates reportedly under consideration include Matthias Jaissle, Sebastian Hoeness, Julian Nagelsmann, and Andoni Iraola, according to Bailey’s sources.
