Liverpool are assessing potential replacements for Alisson Becker, with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen among the leading candidates, according to TEAMtalk. The Merseyside club are preparing for the possibility of losing Alisson, who has reportedly agreed terms in principle with Juventus on a three-year contract with an option for a further season.
Liverpool’s ownership, Fenway Sports Group, and football executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are reportedly cautious about offering long-term contracts to players in their thirties, with Alisson turning 34 later this year. This has led to an intensified search for potential successors, with Verbruggen emerging as a strong option alongside Giorgi Mamardashvili.
While Mamardashvili is highly regarded, concerns remain regarding his readiness to immediately become Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper. Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez has also been discussed internally as an experienced option, but the club are prioritizing younger players with long-term potential. Verbruggen, who has impressed in the Premier League with Brighton, fits that profile.
The Netherlands international is reportedly open to a move away from the Amex Stadium, and Brighton are already planning for his potential departure, viewing Carl Rushworth, currently on loan at Coventry City, as a potential replacement. However, Rushworth is seeking assurances of regular first-team football before committing his future to the club.
Verbruggen has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly a fan of his composure and distribution. Bayern Munich had previously identified him as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer, but Neuer’s contract extension has altered those plans, though the German club still admire the player. Despite the interest from other clubs, the opportunity to become Liverpool’s long-term number one is appealing to Verbruggen.
Liverpool are insistent that they will only allow Alisson to leave if they have secured a suitable replacement. The club is accelerating its search and Verbruggen is emerging as a key target in that process.
