Liverpool and Arsenal are both monitoring Borussia Dortmund left-back Daniel Svensson, with a potential summer transfer fee of €50million (£42.5m / $57m) reported. The Premier League clubs are seeking to bolster their options at left-back, despite already having established first-choice players in those positions.
Liverpool are in the market following Andy Robertson’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Kostas Tsimikas has returned from a loan spell with Roma, but his future at Anfield is uncertain under manager Arne Iraola, particularly with Milos Kerkez already in place. Iraola is reportedly keen to add competition for Kerkez, who had a somewhat inconsistent first season with the club despite improvements later in the campaign.
Arsenal are also considering Svensson as they look to add depth to their left-back ranks, with Mikel Arteta seemingly planning to utilise Myles Lewis-Skelly exclusively in a central midfield role. According to reports, interest from the English clubs is the strongest, although AC Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid have also tracked the Swedish international’s progress.
Dortmund are in a strong negotiating position, having only recently made Svensson’s move from FC Nordsjælland permanent and with his contract running until 2029. The Bundesliga side are known to be firm negotiators and are unlikely to accept a fee below their valuation, which could rise to €50million if a bidding war develops. Svensson, who can play as a left-back, wing-back or in midfield, made substitute appearances for Sweden at the World Cup and started in their last-32 defeat to France.
Whether either Liverpool or Arsenal are willing to meet Dortmund’s asking price for a player who may initially serve as a backup remains to be seen, however, Svensson’s potential is highly regarded. His versatility could prove valuable to either squad, offering tactical flexibility for Iraola or Arteta.
