Liverpool and Real Madrid can trigger Nico Schlotterbeck release clause
Liverpool and Real Madrid are among a select group of clubs with the ability to activate a special release clause in Nico Schlotterbeck's Borussia Dortmund contract this summer, according to reports in Germany. The clause, believed to be valued between €50-60 million (£43-52m), is reportedly only accessible to a handful of elite European sides, with a third, unnamed club also holding the option.
The clause, described as a 'dream club' provision, was included in the 26-year-old German international's recent contract extension with Dortmund. According to Sport Bild, while neither Liverpool nor Real Madrid have yet made a formal offer, their concrete interest in the centre-back remains. The clause is said to be active only until mid-July, creating a narrow window for any potential suitor to act.
The news has caused some consternation among sections of the Dortmund support, with Schlotterbeck reportedly being whistled during a recent home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. However, the player's ambition to potentially move to a club of Real Madrid's stature has been defended by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus. "If Real Madrid comes calling, you want to keep a door open, at least a small crack you can walk through," Matthaus said.
For Liverpool, the pursuit aligns with a clear need to reinforce their defensive line ahead of the new season. The club is expected to sign at least one new central defender, with questions persisting over the long-term future of Ibrahima Konate and captain Virgil van Dijk now 32. Securing a quality, long-term partner for Van Dijk is viewed as a priority after a disappointing campaign that saw Liverpool exit the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
Schlotterbeck, who has 18 caps for Germany, has been a mainstay for Dortmund since joining from SC Freiburg in 2022. Known for his left-footed distribution, aerial prowess, and aggressive defending, his profile fits the modern demands of a top-level centre-back. His potential acquisition would represent a significant statement of intent from Liverpool's new sporting director, Richard Hughes, as the club looks to rebuild.
Meanwhile, the managerial situation at Anfield adds another layer of context to the transfer window. While the club's hierarchy has publicly backed current manager Arne Slot, speculation persists about a potential successor should he depart. Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso remains the favourite, but trusted sources including David Ornstein report that outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is another clear option for the Reds. Hughes, who appointed Iraola at Bournemouth, is a known admirer of the Spanish coach.
The convergence of a key defensive target becoming available and potential managerial uncertainty creates a complex backdrop for Liverpool's summer planning. The club's ability to move decisively for Schlotterbeck, should they choose to, may depend on the clarity and stability of their dugout leadership in the coming weeks.
