Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, potentially hijacking a deal already agreed in principle with Tottenham Hotspur. The news comes after Bournemouth officially announced Senesi’s departure upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
An agreement between Tottenham and Senesi’s representatives had been in place since April, according to TEAMtalk insider Graeme Bailey, but the deal was contingent on Spurs maintaining their Premier League status. While Tottenham’s position has improved, currently sitting two points above the relegation zone with two games remaining, the transfer is not yet formalised, opening the door for other clubs.
Senesi, 27, enjoyed a successful season with Bournemouth, featuring in 35 Premier League matches and contributing to 11 clean sheets. Tottenham, set to be managed by Roberto De Zerbi, are seeking defensive reinforcements given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
However, Liverpool, under incoming manager Arne Slot, have also identified Senesi as a potential target after pursuing Jeremy Jacquet. Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that Senesi is expected to remain in the Premier League, with Liverpool making ‘strong’ recent contact. Chelsea have also shown interest in the Argentinian centre-back.
Barcelona are also monitoring the situation, with Senesi shortlisted as an alternative to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. Should Barcelona fail to secure Bastoni, they may turn their attention to the outgoing Bournemouth player. This creates a complex situation for Tottenham, who now face a battle to convince Senesi to honour the initial agreement as competition intensifies.
