Liverpool have been presented with a potential opportunity to revive their interest in RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, as Paris Saint-Germain are not actively pushing to finalise a deal for the player, according to L'Equipe. Diomande emerged as a key target for several top clubs following a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga and promising performances for Ivory Coast at the World Cup.
The 19-year-old had previously expressed a desire to play for Liverpool, prompting the Merseyside club to submit a €100 million offer to Leipzig. However, this bid was rejected, and Diomande subsequently indicated that a move to PSG would be his preferred outcome, with a five-year contract reportedly agreed in principle.
Despite Diomande’s apparent preference for PSG, the Ligue 1 champions are adopting a cautious approach to negotiations with Leipzig. They are confident in securing the player’s signature due to his stated desire to join, and are unwilling to meet Leipzig’s valuation without a thorough negotiation. Reports suggest Leipzig are seeking a fee exceeding €120 million for the young forward.
This situation bears resemblance to the transfer of Xavi Simons last summer, where Tottenham Hotspur ultimately secured his signature despite Simons initially favouring a move to Chelsea. Chelsea’s protracted negotiations with Leipzig allowed Tottenham to capitalise, highlighting the potential for Liverpool to re-enter the race for Diomande should negotiations between PSG and Leipzig stall. If a deal isn't reached by the end of the month, Liverpool may feel emboldened to make another offer for the Ivorian.
Diomande’s current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is €36.8 million, with a range of €33.1 million to €40.4 million. A successful move for Diomande would bolster Liverpool’s attacking options, addressing a need for reinforcement in the wide positions. It would also represent a significant investment in a promising young talent.
