Liverpool hold fresh talks for Leipzig winger Yan Diomande
Liverpool have held a new round of discussions with RB Leipzig over a potential move for winger Yan Diomande, according to a report from German outlet Bild. The 19-year-old Ivorian international has emerged as a primary target for the Anfield club as they plan for the future, with the fee expected to be in the region of €100 million (£87 million). Paris Saint-Germain are also in talks for the player, setting up a potential transfer battle.
Diomande only joined Leipzig from Spanish second-tier side Leganes last summer but has enjoyed a sensational breakout season. In 33 appearances for the Bundesliga side, he has registered 13 goals and nine assists, establishing himself as one of Europe's most exciting young attacking talents. His dribbling ability has been particularly eye-catching, with his 106 completed dribbles this term the highest tally in the German top flight.
The report states that Liverpool view Diomande as a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah on the right flank. While primarily right-footed, the teenager is effective on either wing, a versatility that appeals to manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes. Sources close to the negotiations have indicated to TransfersDaily that Diomande is open to the move and that personal terms are not expected to be a significant hurdle.
However, Leipzig are attempting to secure Diomande to a new contract before considering a sale, which could delay any potential transfer. The German club's preference, according to sources, would be to retain him for another season and agree a major sale in the summer of 2027. Neither Liverpool nor PSG have yet submitted a formal offer, but the substantial asking price indicates a deal would be a club-record sale for Leipzig.
Liverpool's interest in reinforcing their attack appears to be broad. The club is also actively seeking a second forward following a long-term injury to Hugo Ekitike, who is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months with an Achilles rupture. Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, a boyhood Liverpool supporter, is understood to be a prime candidate. Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea are also tracking the England international, with a fee in the region of £75-100 million anticipated.
The pursuit of Diomande and Gordon signals a significant summer of investment at Anfield as Slot shapes his squad. With Salah's future perennially the subject of speculation amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, securing a high-calibre replacement is a clear priority. Diomande's explosive pace, direct style, and prolific output in his debut Bundesliga season make him a fitting candidate for the role, though competition from the deep-pocketed PSG presents a formidable challenge.
