Liverpool have entered the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, potentially derailing Manchester United’s plans for midfield reinforcements this summer. According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Liverpool have made contact with Wolves regarding a potential deal for the Brazilian, despite United already signalling their interest.
The pursuit of Gomes comes as both clubs seek to bolster their midfield options. Manchester United have been active in the transfer market, securing the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48m plus £2m in add-ons and activating Youri Tielemans’ £35m release clause at Aston Villa, following the failed medical of Atalanta’s Ederson. Gomes and Roma’s Manu Kone were identified as further targets.
Gomes was previously close to joining Atletico Madrid, with a €45m (£38m) agreement in place with Wolves, but that move collapsed reportedly due to issues surrounding agent Jorge Mendes and a separate deal for Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid. This breakdown has now opened the door for both United and Liverpool to make their move.
Wolves are expected to be willing to accept a bid around £38m for Gomes, given their recent relegation to the Championship and the likelihood of losing key players. Liverpool are also considering a move for Kone, with reports from The Kopite View suggesting they are in pole position, although United have also made enquiries.
Liverpool’s midfield situation remains fluid, with Inter Milan expressing interest in Curtis Jones and speculation surrounding Alexis Mac Allister’s future. It is anticipated that Liverpool will prioritise signing either Gomes or Kone, potentially allowing United to pursue the other. The club are also considering alternative winger targets after Arsenal emerged as favourites for Bradley Barcola. Meanwhile, Manchester United are also reportedly pursuing a full-back from Newcastle United.
