Liverpool have emerged as potential suitors for Cologne winger Said El Mala, according to German outlet FussballDaten, as they seek alternatives to their primary target, Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig. The Reds have already secured the signing of Victor Munoz, but manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly keen to add further attacking reinforcements.
RB Leipzig are proving difficult to negotiate with regarding Diomande, currently demanding a Bundesliga-record fee of €148million (£128m) to release the player. This has prompted Liverpool to explore other options, with 19-year-old El Mala identified as an exciting prospect.
El Mala has impressed in the Bundesliga, registering 27 goals in 81 senior appearances with his pace, technical skill, and goalscoring ability. The club views him as a versatile attacker capable of playing on either wing or as an attacking midfielder, offering a dynamic alternative to Diomande.
Liverpool, however, are not alone in their pursuit of the Germany under-21 international. TEAMtalk transfer insider Fraser Fletcher previously reported Tottenham’s interest, with Spurs having held talks with El Mala’s representatives. Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have also been linked, though Brentford withdrew from the race due to complications surrounding a potential deal involving the player’s family.
El Mala’s parents, who are involved in his representation, are reportedly keen for any new club to also consider signing his older brother, Malek El Mala, who also plays for Cologne. This family consideration reportedly contributed to Brentford’s decision to pull out of negotiations. Cologne have reportedly valued El Mala at €50million (£43.1m).
Whether Liverpool will make a formal offer remains to be seen, but the club will need to act swiftly to avoid losing out on the talented youngster to a Premier League rival. Securing El Mala would provide Iraola with another attacking option as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for top honours.
