Liverpool have emerged as strong contenders to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi this summer, according to reports from Matteo Moretto, a colleague of Fabrizio Romano. The 28-year-old Argentina international is set to become a free agent when his contract with Bournemouth expires at the end of the season, having informed the club of his decision not to renew.
Senesi has established himself as a composed and reliable centre-half in the Premier League, known for his tackling, aerial ability, and passing range. He had previously been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with personal terms reportedly agreed, but the deal remains unsigned, opening the door for other clubs to enter the fray. Moretto confirmed that Senesi intends to remain in the Premier League despite interest from Italian clubs.
Liverpool’s interest comes at a time when they are potentially facing changes in their defensive setup, with Virgil van Dijk’s contract expiring next summer. Adding Senesi would provide further competition for places alongside Ibrahima Konate, who is reportedly close to agreeing a new deal with the club, and young prospects Giovani Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet.
Several factors could give Liverpool an advantage in the pursuit of Senesi. Richard Hughes, the club’s incoming sporting director, previously brought Senesi to Bournemouth from Feyenoord in 2022, and their existing relationship could be beneficial. Additionally, Senesi shares a friendship with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who could potentially influence his decision. The prospect of Champions League football at Anfield, and the opportunity to become a key player following a potential departure of Van Dijk, are also seen as attractive incentives.
While competition for Senesi’s signature is expected to be fierce, Liverpool’s combination of sporting and personal connections, coupled with their potential to offer European football, positions them as a significant threat to Tottenham’s hopes of securing the Argentinian defender.
