Liverpool have decided against re-signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah this summer, opting not to exercise a €80 million buy-back clause in his contract, according to BILD. Quansah departed Anfield last year after struggling to establish himself under manager Arne Slot, despite having been a standout player during Jurgen Klopp’s final season.
The centre-back joined Leverkusen for €35 million and has since earned his first England cap and a place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup. Liverpool included a future buy-back provision in the deal, recognising Quansah’s potential, but have determined the current asking price is too high.
While the €80 million fee would represent a net spend of €45 million given Leverkusen’s initial investment, Liverpool are content to allow Quansah to continue his development in Germany. The club are preparing for the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet and the return of Giovanni Leoni from an ACL injury, and are also hoping to secure a contract extension for Ibrahima Konate, which currently appears unlikely.
Liverpool’s strategy is to monitor Quansah’s progress at Leverkusen, who are expected to appoint a new coach—either Oliver Glasner or Andoni Iraola—and believe he will benefit from further high-level experience. A more affordable buy-back option will become available in 2027, when the clause drops to €60 million. The club anticipates Quansah’s value will continue to rise, making the potential 2027 deal a shrewd piece of business for Liverpool’s new leadership team.
