Liverpool and Barcelona Eye Bastoni as Inter Set High Price
Liverpool's pursuit of a new centre-back has been given a potential lift, with Barcelona's initial offer for Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni reportedly rebuffed. According to reports, the Catalan club saw an opening bid of around €50 million (£43.5m) for the Italian international 'laughed off' by Inter Milan.
Barcelona and Liverpool are the two clubs most strongly linked with the 26-year-old defender, who is considering a new challenge away from Serie A. Inter Milan, however, are holding firm on their valuation. The Italian club values Bastoni, a key figure in their recent Scudetto and Champions League campaigns, at a minimum of €80 million (£70m), with some reports suggesting a fee closer to €100 million (£87m) may be required to secure his signature.
Barcelona's financial constraints are a significant factor in the potential deal. Their initial, lower offer is seen as a starting point, but their ability to meet Inter's steep asking price remains a major obstacle. This potential impasse could open the door for Liverpool, who have identified Bastoni as a primary target to eventually succeed Virgil van Dijk. The 26-year-old is seen as an ideal, left-footed successor, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success at the highest level.
While Barcelona were initially considered frontrunners, the financial gulf between their opening offer and Inter's valuation is significant. This stalemate could allow Liverpool to move to the front of the queue should they be willing to meet the Italian club's demands. Bastoni, who has made nearly 300 appearances for Inter and won the 2020-21 Serie A title, is also reported to be considering a lucrative new contract offer from Inter, which could see him remain at the San Siro if an agreement with a suitor cannot be reached.
For Liverpool, securing a player of Bastoni's calibre would represent a major coup and a significant step in the planned defensive evolution under new head coach Arne Slot. The club is also monitoring other centre-back options, including Nico Schlotterbeck, Micky van de Ven, and Maxence Lacroix, but Bastoni remains a primary target. The coming weeks will reveal whether Barcelona can bridge the financial gap or if Liverpool will seize the initiative in the race for one of Europe's most coveted defenders.
