Simeone's emotional tribute to Griezmann highlights enduring Atlético bond
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone delivered an unusually public and emotional tribute to forward Antoine Griezmann during a pre-match press conference on Tuesday. Speaking ahead of his side's fifth meeting with Barcelona this season, the Argentine praised the Frenchman's character and contribution, stating, "As a coach and a supporter of Atlético, I want to thank you for your hard work and your humility. You are a model for today's youth, in a society that needs more people like you. Thank you for everything you have brought us." The comments, captured in a video shared on social media, underscore the profound relationship between the two figures that has defined a significant era for the club.
Simeone, known for his reserved public demeanour, elaborated on their close personal bond. "You are a player, but I also consider you a friend. We have a Copa del Rey final left and, God willing, we will play five more matches in the Champions League. Enjoy it, I love you very much," he said, before adding with characteristic pragmatism, "Afterwards, I remain your coach, so you know that tomorrow if you don't run, you will come off." Their connection extends beyond the pitch, with the pair having vacationed together. Griezmann famously sent Simeone a text message immediately after winning the 2018 World Cup, telling him the trophy was also for him, as he later explained to France Football.
This public acknowledgement comes years after Griezmann's controversial €120 million departure to Barcelona in the summer of 2019, a move that initially strained his relationship with the club's supporters. At the time, Simeone notably refused to criticise the player, telling AS, "Antoine always gave everything for Atlético when he was here, and I do not wish to judge a five-year relationship solely on how it ended. What he did here is fantastic." Griezmann returned to Madrid on an initial loan in 2021, with the move made permanent for a reported fee of around €20 million, a fraction of his original sale price, after a difficult period at Camp Nou.
In response during the same press conference, Griezmann reflected on Simeone's immense influence on his career. "To open my heart, I need to be with my children and my wife, and with Cholo and his family. That's where I can really express myself," he said. "But yes, I owe him so much. I reached a level I never imagined. First thanks to Real Sociedad, and then thanks to Cholo, who through his work taught me an enormous amount. On a personal level, I admire him and love him. It is an honour, a pride and a pleasure to play for him."
Together, the duo has secured significant silverware for Atlético, including the 2018 Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, and reached the 2016 Champions League final. Griezmann has since cemented his legacy, becoming the club's all-time top scorer in the Champions League and, as of January 2024, their outright record goalscorer with 211 goals. The remainder of this season offers a chance to add more honours, with a Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona and a Copa del Rey final against his boyhood club, Real Sociedad, on the horizon. The latter presents an opportunity for both Simeone and Griezmann to win the only major domestic trophy that has eluded them with Atlético.
The mutual admiration serves as a poignant footnote to a transfer saga that has come full circle. Griezmann's triumphant return and record-breaking exploits have healed the rift with fans, solidifying his status as a modern legend. As the season reaches its climax, the enduring partnership between player and manager remains a central pillar of Atlético Madrid's pursuit of further glory.
