Grégory Lorenzi, recently linked with the sporting director role at Olympique de Marseille, is at the center of a contract dispute with OGC Nice, according to reports in France. While widely expected to replace Medhi Benatia at Marseille, Lorenzi has yet to sign a formal agreement with the club.
Nice-Matin reports that Lorenzi has already signed a contract with Nice, a deal that would become fully valid should the club maintain its Ligue 1 status. This pre-existing agreement is currently blocking his potential move to Marseille. The situation has reportedly angered officials at Nice, who are prepared to assert their rights regarding the signed contract.
The most likely outcome, should Nice avoid relegation via the promotion/relegation playoff against AS Saint-Étienne, appears to be the payment of compensation to Nice by either Lorenzi or Marseille. While uncommon for sporting directors, such payments are more frequently seen when players transfer to another club late in a window.
Olympique de Marseille, however, have publicly distanced themselves from the situation. L’Équipe reports that the club maintains it is not involved in the dispute and does not consider itself a party to the contract issue. Lorenzi previously served as a defender for Brest, earning a reputation for strong leadership and tactical awareness. He had been identified by Marseille as a key figure in their restructuring plans following Benatia’s departure.
The uncertainty surrounding Lorenzi’s future leaves Marseille’s search for a sporting director unresolved, potentially impacting their preparations for the upcoming transfer window. For Nice, resolving the situation will be crucial to maintaining stability within their sporting department, regardless of their Ligue 1 status.
