Lorient confirm manager Olivier Pantaloni will depart at season's end
FC Lorient have confirmed that manager Olivier Pantaloni will leave the club when his contract expires this summer. The announcement, made in an official club statement on Wednesday, comes despite the Ligue 1 side having presented the 59-year-old with a substantial new two-year offer.
The club stated that the offer, extended shortly after a change in the club's ownership structure in mid-February, represented the highest salary ever proposed to a coach in Lorient's history. It was intended to reward Pantaloni for securing promotion from Ligue 2 last season and for guiding the team to a comfortable mid-table position this campaign, with the club currently ninth. According to the statement, negotiations continued until Tuesday night but ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Pantaloni had already informed French newspaper Ouest-France of his decision to depart earlier on Wednesday. The veteran coach, who previously managed AC Ajaccio for over eight years, took charge at Lorient in 2023. He successfully led the Breton club to the Ligue 2 title in his first season, achieving immediate promotion back to the top flight.
His impending exit marks the end of a brief but successful chapter for Les Merlus, stabilizing the club after promotion. In their communiqué, Lorient's hierarchy paid tribute to Pantaloni and his staff, acknowledging their major role in the club's recent successes. The statement emphasized the club's sincere desire to continue the project under his leadership, framed within a challenging economic context.
The departure appears linked to Pantaloni's personal reflections on his career longevity. In an interview with So Foot magazine in September 2022, he indicated a plan to coach only until legal retirement age, stating, "I don't see myself lasting very long in this job. I will work until the legal age and then, I will try to enjoy life. Real life."
Lorient must now begin the search for a new manager to build upon the foundation laid this season. The club's solid league position provides an attractive platform for a successor, though replacing a figure who achieved such clear objectives will be a challenge. Pantaloni's next move is unclear, but his work in Brittany has reinforced his reputation for achieving tangible results with defined projects.
