Lucas Digne has completed a move back to Paris Saint-Germain from Aston Villa, the Ligue 1 champions have confirmed. The club activated the release clause in the 33-year-old’s contract, reportedly valued at €10 million, securing his services on a three-year deal. Digne is expected to undergo a medical in the coming hours before finalising the terms of his return to the French capital.
This transfer marks a reunion for Digne and PSG, although his previous spell with the club between 2013 and 2015 did not see him establish himself as a regular starter. He made limited appearances for the Parisian side before moving on to AS Roma in 2015, where he began to demonstrate his potential as one of Europe’s most consistent left-backs. Following a successful stint in Italy, Digne joined FC Barcelona in 2016, playing a part in their Copa del Rey triumph.
Digne eventually arrived in the Premier League with Everton in 2018, quickly becoming a fan favourite at Goodison Park with his energetic performances and crossing ability. He later moved to Aston Villa in January 2022, becoming a key player under both Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard, though his form dipped somewhat during the latter’s tenure. He has amassed 64 caps for the French national team, recently featuring in the 2022 World Cup squad.
Aston Villa will be looking to reinvest the fee received for Digne, potentially seeking a replacement left-back before the close of the transfer window. For PSG, the signing provides competition and depth in a crucial position, adding experience to their already star-studded squad as they aim to continue their dominance in Ligue 1 and compete for further Champions League success. The move allows Digne to return to his home country and compete at the highest level.
