Luis Enrique to stay at PSG as Manchester United manager search continues
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique will not be the next permanent manager of Manchester United, with the Spaniard set to sign a new contract with the French champions, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. The update dashes recent speculation linking the former Barcelona boss with a move to Old Trafford to succeed Erik ten Hag.
Romano reported that while there are figures within the Manchester United hierarchy who are "big fans" of Enrique and have considered him a potential target, the 55-year-old is now in talks to extend his contract at PSG. The former Spain manager, who has guided PSG to a historic quadruple and is on course for further success this season, is reportedly close to committing his long-term future to the French club.
This development leaves United's managerial search, which has been ongoing since the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, in a state of flux. The club is currently led by interim manager Michael Carrick, who has overseen a positive run of form. Romano noted that the club is "very happy" with Carrick's work in a caretaker capacity. However, the club's hierarchy is still conducting an internal process to decide on a permanent appointment for the 2026/27 season and beyond.
Enrique's success in France, where he has established PSG as a dominant force both domestically and in Europe, had made him an attractive candidate for the United hierarchy. However, Romano's update confirms that a move to Old Trafford is not on the cards, with the manager's focus firmly on his project in Paris. The news will be a blow to those within the United structure who, as Romano noted, "dream" of appointing a manager of Enrique's calibre.
With Enrique out of the running, United's focus will now shift to other candidates. The club has been linked with several high-profile names, but with Enrique off the table, the internal discussions about the long-term managerial direction are set to intensify. The club's leadership, including incoming sporting director Jason Wilcox, will now accelerate their process to identify and secure their primary target, with the future of interim boss Carrick also a key part of the conversation as the season enters its final phase.
