Luis Enrique among candidates considered by Manchester United
Manchester United's hierarchy is considering a move for Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique as part of a wider search for a permanent head coach, according to reports. The club's decision-makers, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are assessing several top-level candidates, casting fresh doubt on interim boss Michael Carrick's prospects of securing the role long-term.
Carrick, who took temporary charge in January, initially received widespread praise for improving the team's style of play and re-igniting their push for Champions League qualification. However, a recent 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United has reportedly caused concern among INEOS officials, with senior reporter David McDonnell stating the performance damaged Carrick's standing. Sources suggest there is apprehension about a "lack of intensity and purpose" and a wariness of falling into a "sentimental trap" similar to the one that led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent appointment in 2019.
The club's shortlist, as reported by SPORTbible, extends beyond Luis Enrique. It is said to include Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Aston Villa's Unai Emery, and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner, who has announced he will leave Selhurst Park at the season's end. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, who is also departing his club, is under consideration as well. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Iraola would be open to discussing the United job if approached.
Luis Enrique represents the most decorated name on the list, having won a historic treble with Barcelona in 2015 and multiple domestic titles with PSG. His potential availability, however, is uncertain as he is considered likely to remain in Paris. The situation remains fluid, with other candidates like Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti reportedly no longer in the frame due to their commitments with England and Brazil respectively.
Despite the external noise, some sources close to the club insist Carrick continues to impress internally. Our transfer insider Graeme Bailey noted that people within United have "garnered so much respect for Carrick and his team" for how they have managed all aspects of the club, with staff and players reportedly impressed by his tenure. This internal support suggests the process remains open, even as the club conducts a broad review of potential successors.
The coming weeks will be critical for Carrick as he aims to secure a top-five finish, with Aston Villa and Liverpool applying pressure. The final decision will ultimately rest with Ratcliffe, Omar Berrada, and Jason Wilcox as they plot a course for what they hope will be a successful new era at Old Trafford.
