New AS Monaco manager Filipe Luís has spoken publicly about the future of midfielder Paul Pogba, who remains under contract with the club until 2027. Luís addressed the media on Wednesday, following his appointment as the new head coach, and discussed his initial conversations with the 33-year-old Frenchman.
Luís praised Pogba as a “special player, a world champion, and a great idol in France,” acknowledging his pedigree and potential contribution. However, he was firm in stating that “no one is above the team,” emphasizing that his focus will be on evaluating all players’ performances during pre-season. He expressed hope that Pogba will regain his peak form, stating that the club will support him in doing so, and that if he achieves that level, he will be a valuable asset.
Sporting director Thiago Scuro offered a more tempered assessment of Pogba’s situation. While acknowledging Pogba’s positive attitude and work ethic, particularly in assisting younger players, Scuro reminded reporters that “the project didn’t work well last season.” This is a reference to Pogba’s limited playing time in Ligue 1, where he appeared in only six matches for a total of 115 minutes.
Scuro indicated that the decision regarding Pogba’s future will ultimately rest with Luís, who will have the entire summer to assess his level. He concluded with a non-committal statement, saying, “Maybe he will leave, maybe he will stay.” This suggests the club is open to both retaining Pogba and allowing him to move on.
The situation highlights the uncertainty surrounding Pogba’s role at Monaco following a disappointing first season after his return to Italy. His high wages and injury history add complexity to the decision. Luís’s evaluation will be crucial in determining whether Pogba can rediscover his form and justify his place in the squad, or if a departure is the best course of action for both player and club.
