Romelu Lukaku has expressed his desire to stay at Napoli for the upcoming season, despite a challenging previous campaign and the recent departure of manager Antonio Conte. The Belgian striker, currently under contract with the Serie A club until 2025, stated his “love for Napoli remains unchanged” in a recent interview with Het Nieuwsblad, as reported by Napoli’s official channels.
Lukaku’s first season with Napoli was considered a success, but the 2023-24 campaign was disrupted by injury, including a thigh injury sustained during a pre-season friendly, and the personal tragedy of his father’s death. His relationship with former manager Conte was reportedly strained, with Lukaku struggling for consistent playing time despite being fully fit. Conte often preferred Rasmus Hojlund, even in matches where Lukaku could have gained valuable minutes, leading to friction between the player and coach.
Following Conte’s departure, Lukaku has been more vocal about his commitment to Napoli. He emphasized that he is focused on regaining his role as a key player and dismissed suggestions that he is seeking an exit. “If people think I want to use this situation as an opportunity to leave, they are wrong,” Lukaku said. He also clarified that his recent time away from the club was dedicated to recovery and addressing a minor physical issue.
The arrival of Massimiliano Allegri as Napoli’s new manager has further boosted Lukaku’s prospects. Allegri was previously linked with a move for Lukaku last year, and the prospect of the pair working together is now a real possibility. According to reports, Allegri envisions Lukaku as a central figure in his attack, potentially forming a formidable partnership with Hojlund. Lukaku currently earns a substantial €8 million per season, and is willing to honor his contract, even if a renewal is not offered. He recently reported reaching a top speed of 35.5 km/h during training with the Belgian national team, indicating his improving fitness levels.
