Lyon End Winless Run with Victory Over Lorient, Tolisso and Yaremchuk on Target
Olympique Lyonnais ended a two-month wait for a Ligue 1 victory with a 2-0 win over FC Lorient at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday. Goals in the second half from substitutes Roman Yaremchuk and captain Corentin Tolisso secured a crucial three points for Pierre Sage's side, lifting them to fifth in the table.
The breakthrough came shortly after the introduction of Brazilian forward Endrick at half-time. The 18-year-old, on as a substitute, provided an instant impact, delivering a cross for Yaremchuk to head home his first Ligue 1 goal for the club in the 49th minute. The Ukrainian striker, a January arrival from Club Brugge, finally opened his account for Les Gones with a powerful header.
The lead was doubled just eight minutes later, as the impact of the substitutes continued. Corentin Tolisso, who had also entered the fray at the interval, was quickest to react after Endrick's shot was saved by Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo, nodding the rebound into an empty net. The goal was a significant moment for the club captain, who has battled injuries this season, and it effectively sealed the points for Lyon.
Lorient, who remain in a precarious position near the bottom of the table, had their best chance just before half-time when Cheikh Bamba Dieng was denied by a spectacular one-handed save from Lyon's Dominik Greif. The Lyon goalkeeper was called into action again in the second half, making another crucial stop to preserve his clean sheet.
The victory marks a significant moment for Lyon, who had not won a league match since late January. The return of key players from injury and the impact of January signings like Yaremchuk are providing a timely boost. The win moves Lyon to within a single point of fourth-placed Marseille, rekindling hopes of a late push for European qualification.
For Lorient, the defeat is a setback in their fight against relegation. They remain just two points above the relegation play-off spot, and while they showed resilience in the first half, they lacked the cutting edge to truly trouble a resurgent Lyon side. The result leaves them in 16th place, with the pressure mounting as the season enters its final stretch.
