Olympique Lyonnais have secured the signing of Scotland international Caroline Weir following the expiration of her contract at Real Madrid. The 30-year-old forward has agreed terms on a three-year deal with the French champions, committing her to the club until June 2029, as reported by L’Équipe.
Weir joins Lyon after a prolific spell in the Spanish capital, where she established herself as Real Madrid’s leading goalscorer with 63 goals in 125 appearances. Last season, the Scottish international enjoyed a particularly successful campaign, contributing 20 goals and 8 assists in 40 games across all competitions. Her departure from Real Madrid comes as a free transfer, allowing Lyon to bolster their attacking options without a transfer fee.
Capped 102 times by Scotland, scoring 17 goals, Weir brings significant international experience to Lyon. She previously played in the Women’s Super League with Liverpool and Manchester City before making the move to Spain in 2022. At Manchester City, she was a key player, known for her versatility and ability to both score and create goals.
Lyon are aiming to regain their dominance in both domestic and European competitions. The club recently completed a domestic treble of the Championnat, Coupe de France, and Coupe de la Ligue, and will look to repeat this success in the upcoming season. More importantly, Lyon are eager to add to their record of eight Champions League titles, having last lifted the trophy in 2022. Weir’s arrival is expected to significantly strengthen Lyon’s attacking force as they pursue these ambitions, providing a proven goalscorer and creative outlet.
