Reports indicate a confrontation is imminent between Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as the fallout from the forward’s recent interview continues. The situation escalated after Mbappe was jeered by his own supporters during his return from injury in a 2-0 win against Real Oviedo on Thursday, following images emerging of him on holiday in Sardinia while sidelined.
Mbappe, who has recently expressed feeling like the ‘fourth-choice striker’ under interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa, publicly praised former coach Xabi Alonso, further straining relations. Jose Mourinho is expected to be appointed as Madrid’s new manager and will be tasked with reintegrating Mbappe and repairing the fractured atmosphere within the squad.
According to AS reporter Jose Felix Diaz, Perez intends to address the growing ‘fracture’ between Mbappe and Arbeloa, with concerns rising over the player’s behaviour and perceived detachment from the team. While Mbappe is considered a ‘cornerstone’ of the club’s long-term plans, Perez has demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions, citing the past departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos as evidence that ‘nobody is untouchable.’
Mourinho has been tasked with ‘restoring discipline’ and addressing existing issues within the squad, including partnerships between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, and Alvaro Carreras and Antonio Rudiger. Despite the challenges, the club is expected to back Mourinho’s decisions, even if they involve significant player departures, though a sale of Mbappe is currently considered unlikely. Meanwhile, former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has advised the club to avoid pursuing a move for Mbappe, citing concerns about his work rate and team ethic, suggesting he wouldn’t fit into a system prioritizing collective pressing.
Elsewhere, reports suggest Mourinho has already discussed the situation with Arbeloa, and is also considering moves for players from his former clubs, including a potential bid for a Manchester United winger.
