Mainz 05 are poised to sign Eric Martel from 1. FC Köln on a free transfer, with the player expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday, according to reports from Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Sky Germany.
The move comes after 1. FC Köln announced over the weekend that Martel would depart at the end of his contract this summer.
Several clubs reportedly expressed interest in the 24-year-old, including VfL Wolfsburg, but Mainz ultimately secured the deal for the versatile midfielder.
Martel initially joined Köln from RB Leipzig in 2022 and quickly established himself as a key player for the Billygoats, making a total of 134 appearances across all competitions.
During his time at Köln, Martel scored eight goals and provided five assists, demonstrating his ability to contribute both defensively and in attack.
He primarily featured as a defensive midfielder, shielding the back four and breaking up opposition play, but also proved capable of playing in central defence when required.
Mainz have been seeking midfield reinforcement following a season where they finished 15th in the Bundesliga, narrowly avoiding relegation.
The addition of Martel will provide manager Bo Svensson with a dynamic and experienced player capable of improving both their defensive solidity and build-up play.
For Köln, losing Martel represents a blow, as he was a consistent performer and a fan favourite, however, the club were unable to agree on terms for a contract extension.
The transfer provides Mainz with a valuable addition without a transfer fee, strengthening their squad ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season.
