Mainz have announced the permanent signing of Fabio Gruber from 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg. The 23-year-old center-back joins the Bundesliga club after a period with Nürnberg where he established himself as a key player despite a relatively short spell. Mainz reportedly beat competition from fellow Bundesliga clubs Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach to secure Gruber’s signature.
Gruber was born in Augsburg and has recently begun to feature for the Peruvian national team, earning five appearances in their last six matches after receiving his first call-up at the end of 2025. Prior to joining Nürnberg, the defender captained 3. Liga side Verl, and also had a brief stint under Miroslav Klose at the same club, demonstrating leadership qualities early in his career. His international emergence adds another dimension to his profile as a promising young defender.
Mainz’s sporting director, Niko Bungert, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that Gruber is a “young, extremely combative and technically gifted center-back with a top character” who has already shown “considerable leadership qualities.” Bungert highlighted the club’s belief that Gruber sees a future with Mainz, indicating a strong alignment in ambition between player and club.
Gruber himself confirmed his positive impression of the club during the negotiation process. “From the beginning, I had very good talks with Urs Fischer and the Mainz management,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to the Bundesliga, and my new challenge here in Mainz.” This suggests a proactive approach from Mainz in presenting a compelling vision for Gruber’s development.
The transfer provides Mainz with a promising young defender who has already shown leadership potential, addressing a need for depth and quality in their backline. For Gruber, the move represents a step up to the Bundesliga and an opportunity to further develop his game at a higher level, while also potentially solidifying his place in the Peruvian national team.
